Tarp Systems For Class 4 – 6 Cab Over Trucks

Mid-duty trucks range from 14,000 to 26,000 lbs, like F-450 super duty pickups, E-450 chassis, box trucks, and city delivery rigs. Our semi-automatic systems are perfect for this truck class, as they offer durability, protection against falling debris, and safe operation from the ground via rope and the roller’s spring tension.

Semi-Automatic · Best

SuperShield™ 9500m system

This is the strongest, most durable Semi-Automatic Tarp System available in the industry. The fully-welded 12 gauge steel construction offers the best protection from falling debris. Designed for longer applications up to 40 feet, the external ratcheting spring adjustment allows for easy spring tensioning in the field.

X-Pando™ (Semi-Automatic) System

The X-Pando semi-automatic tarp system features housing that adjusts to fit any truck width from 78in to 100in. This EZ-Fit System is able to slide and expand to fit your exact truck body specifications by simply sliding each side of the galvanized steel housing to the desired position and securing.

Semi-Automatic· Good

Open 9000M system

The Open System, our most economical semi-automatic tarp system that can hold up to 30 feet of tarp, is great for applications where falling debris and loader damage are not concerns. It’s known as our “Open System” because there is no housing to protect the tarp and roller. It includes black powder-coated end plates and steel bolt-in spring shaft anchor.

Final configuration depends on bed length, tarp material (Vinyl, HD Mesh, Super HD Mesh, Asphalt Vinyl), and mounting hardware. Configure each system for pricing on its product page.

Automatic Or Semi-Auto?

Class 4-6 is the class where this decision actually matters. Semi-auto wins on upfront cost and simplicity for trucks that cycle a few times a day; automatic earns its keep when the truck cycles constantly or runs in a regulated jurisdiction.

Semi-Automatic

Value Pick For Class 4-6

+

Spring-assisted, no electric required

+

Lower upfront cost, simpler service

+

Ground-operated — no climbing the bed

−

Manual pull — slower cycle, more operator effort

Best for: 1-3 cycles/day, owner-operators, no-electric chassis, box and walk-in bodies.

Automatic

For High Cycle Counts

+

Cab-switch operation, so driver stays in seat

+

~10-15 second cycle, no climbing

+

Best operator safety + DOT compliance story

−

Higher upfront cost; requires cab wiring

Best for: Trucks running 5+ cycles/day, hot-mix asphalt, regulated jurisdictions.

Cab Over Tarp — FAQs

Questions fleet managers and owner-operators ask about tarping Class 4 – 6 cab-over and chassis-cab trucks.

It comes down to how often the truck cycles. If you tarp and untarp a few times a day, a semi-automatic spring-assist system covers it at a lower upfront cost. If the truck cycles all day, hauls hot asphalt, or runs in a regulated jurisdiction, a full automatic pays for itself in time saved and compliance. This is the class where both are genuinely valid.

Yes — federal regulation 49 CFR § 393.100 requires secure, contained cargo on commercial vehicles, and states add their own dump and material-hauling rules. Any Class 4-6 truck hauling aggregate, debris, or loose material needs to be tarped. See our state-by-state guide.

Measure your bed length and width, then add 12 – 18 inches in each direction for rolling and side coverage. Most Class 4-5 beds run 10′ × 84″ or 12′ × 84″; larger Class 6 bodies use 14′ × 84″ or 16′ × 88″. The configurator will spec the exact size from your dimensions.

A semi-automatic system installs in about 2 – 3 hours since there’s no electrical run. A full automatic takes 4 – 6 hours including cab wiring and final test. Use the installer locator to find a shop near you.

Not for the tarp system — mounting is driven by the body and bed, not the cab. Whether the truck is cab-over or conventional, the system mounts to the dump or material body. The configurator accounts for body type when you spec your truck.

Pulltarps automatic systems carry a 5-year limited warranty on the housing and motor; semi-automatic systems are warrantied on the housing and spring assembly, and tarps carry a 1-year warranty. Material choice affects tarp life — read the full warranty terms.
