Articulated (Off-Highway) dump trucks are heavy construction equipment and share little resemblance to highway dump trucks. Bigger off-highway dump trucks are used strictly off-road for mining and heavy dirt hauling jobs. There are two primary forms: rigid frame and articulating frame. The term “dump” truck is not generally used by the mining industry, or by the manufacturers that build these machines. The more appropriate U.S. term for this strictly off road vehicle is “haul truck” and the equivalent European term is “dumper”.

Our Steel Protector +™ Automatic Tarp System is designed for longer applications that require some protection from falling debris. The Steel Protector+ holds 28′ of tarp and works with all types of dump truck bodies. It includes a steel bolt-in spring shaft anchor, mounting brackets, tarp roller tube, system housing, arm pivots, 1.3 HP electric motor, and smart switch kit.

On public roads, federal regulation 49 CFR § 393.100 and state cargo-securement laws require covered loads, but Class 9 haul trucks usually work strictly off-highway, where the requirement is driven by the site’s mining or environmental rules instead. Yes. Articulating trucks bend at a hinge between the cab and bed, so the system has to be mounted to clear that pivot and stay clear through the full range of articulation. We spec the arm length, housing position, and mount per machine, so it’s a custom fit, not an off-the-shelf bolt-on. Send us your make, model, and bed dimensions and we’ll engineer the fitment.
There’s no standard part number for Class 9. These are large off-highway machines and every fitment is custom. We size to your frame, bed length, and bed width, then select the housing and tarp material to match. Measure the Inside and Outside dimensions of your box and the overall box length before you call, so we can spec it accurately.
For overburden, ore, and dry aggregate, HD Mesh and Super HD Mesh are the durable choices. The avoid fines, resist abrasion, and let dust and water pass instead of pooling. Vinyl is the pick when you need a fully sealed cover. Sustained abrasive loads wear any tarp, so mesh typically gives the longest service life on a haul truck.
A Class 9 bed is far too large and too high to safely hand-pull a cover, and these trucks cycle heavy loads all day. An automatic system covers the dump body from the safety of the cab in seconds, so there’s no need to climb a machine of this size. Manual and semi-automatic covers aren’t a realistic option at this weight class.
